Adult Movie Theatres in Hartford
Connecticut · last checked 20 October 2026
Hartford has a proper adult cinema, in a 1919 movie palace, with six hundred seats and a balcony reserved for couples. It closed in 2019 to be refurbished and reopened in December 2020, which is the month almost everything else in this directory stopped for good. There are two more places with rooms, a hundred yards apart on the same service road.

Not a room behind a shop. An actual cinema, built in 1919, with a main floor and a balcony, still holding a 35mm projector it never uses because everything plays off disc now.
The balcony is the point and it is couples only. A woman who went with her boyfriend in May 2026 wrote that they had the place to themselves in the afternoon, that there was plenty of space and a good view, and that it was far cleaner than she had expected. Another regular in November 2025 said people are respectful up there. A third advises bringing friends so you can go up at all.
Practical notes from the people who go: the heating works, they sell water and odds and ends, and you should bring whatever else you want. Single men are told plainly on the listing to arrange things with couples beforehand rather than turn up hoping.

Up in the North Meadows beside the interstate. A customer in August 2026 listed what is there: a variety of spaces, video booths wired to interactive devices, and more than one theatre room. Another drives in from a neighbouring state for it.
One warning from 2023 that is worth repeating because nobody has contradicted it: the published closing time and the actual closing time did not match, and somebody arriving near midnight was turned away. Phone if you are going late.

A hundred yards down the same service road from Luv Boutique. The clearest description is from December 2024: private booths, some with gloryholes, and two separate areas where you can sit and watch a film, either alone or with somebody beside you.
Overwhelmingly men. A visitor in July 2026 found it clean and friendly and said so briefly.

The one that reopened
Read this page against Reno, where the only adult cinema was open in June 2019 and gone by June 2022 with nobody recording the day. Or Little Rock, where the arcades shut in 2020 and the staff told customers they were not coming back.
Hartford went the other way. The Art closed in January 2019 for upgrades, ran a public fundraising campaign to pay for them, and reopened fully refurbished on 19 December 2020.
- 1919Opens as the Rialto, a neighbourhood movie palace on Franklin Avenue.
- 1941Run by Warner Bros. Circuit Management, in a chain with the Colonial, Lenox and Lyric.
- 1951Business falls away. It turns to art and foreign films and takes the name Art Cinema.
- 1970sAdult films. By the theatre's own count Hartford had close to a dozen adult houses in this decade and the next.
- January 2019Closes for refurbishment, with a public fundraising campaign behind it.
- 19 December 2020Reopens, fully refurbished, nine months into the pandemic.
A dozen, down to one
The theatre’s own account is that Hartford had close to a dozen adult cinemas across the 1970s and 1980s. That figure comes from the business rather than from a record we could check, and it is the sort of number that grows in the retelling, but the shape of it matches every other city on this site.
What makes Hartford different is only the ending. Everywhere else the last one closed. Here the last one is a 1919 house still run by the same family, which has held it for something like forty or fifty years depending on which account you read, and which spent a year and a lot of money putting it back together rather than letting it go.
It calls itself one of the last art deco adult cinemas in North America. On the evidence of this directory, that is probably true.
