Adult Movie Theatres in Lexington
Kentucky · last checked 20 October 2026
Lexington has two places open and each of them has two theatres, which is more rooms than most cities ten times its size. One runs around the clock. The same customer visited both on the same day in August 2026 and came out with opposite opinions, which is the most useful thing anybody has written about either.

The better of the two, by the account of somebody who saw both on the same day. Ten dollars gets you in. Two theatres, one described as big, a run of peep booths, and a couple of gloryholes.
The word that visitor used was clean, which in this directory is worth more than any star rating. A regular back in 2019 called it the cleanest and cheapest in town and said to just ask the staff if you want anything.

Open all night, and the only venue in Kentucky on this site that is. The layout is unusual and worth knowing: two separate theatres, one for a straight audience and one for a gay audience, with the booths in their own section. If you smoke, they will let you step outside and come back in.
The condition is the problem. The same person who called Video Max clean called this one nasty and said it does not look like it gets cleaned often. A visitor in February 2025 was far harsher, describing litter and spills on the floor. A third in May 2026 had a fine time and said the staff were friendly. Go in expecting the first two accounts rather than the third.
One thing it gets consistent credit for: a crossdresser who went in nervous at the end of 2024 wrote that everybody was respectful and that they got what they came for and left quickly.

The two cinemas next door to each other
Lexington’s adult cinema and its most loved building are the same stretch of Main Street, put up by the same family, and for a while they were the same business.
- 1922The Switow family builds the Kentucky Theatre on Main Street.
- 20 April 1929The same family opens the State next door, with Norman Kerry in Trial Marriage.
- 28 January 1964The State becomes the Downtown Cinema, an art house showing foreign films.
- 1970sIt gives its screen over almost entirely to adult films.
- 10 October 1985Renamed Movies on Main.
- 2 October 1987Fire in an adjoining restaurant damages both buildings.
- 1996The State is restored and reopens as an annex of the Kentucky, showing films and live performance.
The State at 214 Main Street opened in 1929 beside the larger Kentucky, both built by the Switows. Schine ran it by 1941. In 1964 it tried foreign films as the Downtown Cinema, which is the move half the houses in this directory made just before they turned, and it turned.
Then the fire in 1987 took both. The Kentucky was repaired because this city would not lose it. And in 1996 the State was restored too, not as itself but as the Kentucky’s annex, showing films and live performance under its neighbour’s name.
So the building that spent the 1970s showing almost nothing but pornography is now part of the cultural institution next door, and almost nobody walking past knows which half is which. That is a kinder ending than most of the buildings on this site got.
