Adult Movie Theatres in Albany

New York · last checked 23 October 2026

By the record, the capital of New York State had exactly one adult cinema in its entire history. It ran for ten years on Central Avenue and became a Jiffy Lube, which has since closed too. Nothing is open inside the city today. What the Capital District has is across the river in Rensselaer and up the road in Troy, and the Troy one will tell you in writing whether the booth doors lock.

The nearest venue to Albany with rooms, four miles over the river. Also known locally by the East Greenbush name.

It has been fixed. A regular who had written it off updated his review in March 2025 to say a new manager had turned the place around, that things were no longer broken, and that the whole place had been redone. That matters, because the older reviews here are brutal: in 2017 somebody described booths barely big enough for a child and theatre sound worse than a toy shop.

On the door price. A couple who drove over an hour in April 2022 had phoned ahead and been told couples were free that night, then found it was fifteen dollars a head, and the clerk settled it at two for one. Their observation is worth recording because it is the economics of this whole trade in one line: most places let couples in free, because a couple in the room brings the men in.

One customer in September 2024 was refused entry with her handbag and found the manager rude and the other customers worse. That was before the refit and the change of manager.

A clean, modern shop on River Street with an arcade behind it, and the only place in this directory where the operator has answered the door question directly.

Somebody asked whether couples are allowed into the booths together and whether the doors can be shut and locked. The reply, posted under the business owner’s own account, was that couples are welcome and the booths can be private.

A second customer asked whether the booths have doors at all, explaining that he had taken his girlfriend to one in New Jersey where the booths had curtains and men kept walking in on them, and it ruined her first visit. The business answered that one too, in four words: yes, they have doors.

A third question, about what a private room costs and what it is for, was answered with a flat $20 by another customer rather than by the shop, so treat that figure as a customer’s and check at the counter.

Those two questions, asked in public by strangers, are the whole subject of this directory. Everything else on this site is us working out the answer from cut-down doors, one-person rules, sightline codes and raids.

The shop itself is well run. Reviews through November 2025 and March 2026 describe knowledgeable staff and fair prices, which is not the usual tone on these pages.

Three more trade in the district and none is counted. Adult World at 1100 Altamont Avenue, Schenectady, (518) 374-8952, keeps the same hours as its Rensselaer sister and a regular in April 2025 wrote that weekends are best and weeknights slow, which reads like a man describing a room rather than a shop. Nobody has said so plainly, so we are not counting it. Another World at 1332 Lower Broadway, Schenectady, has one review, from February 2026, by somebody who had never used the booths but had heard they were clean. Fantasy Island on State Highway 30 at Amsterdam is an unclaimed listing with no reviews at all, trading 11am to 7pm.

Does the door lock?

That is the question the Troy shop answered, and it is the question every page on this site has been circling.

  1. Troy, New York

Couples welcome in a booth together. The doors can be private.

The business answered the question on its own listing.

  2. Toledo, Ohio

Booth doors cut down, one customer per booth.

The operator said they learned it the hard way, after a raid.

  3. Colorado Springs

An unobstructed view from a staffed manager's station of every area a patron can reach.

City Code 2.4.114, printed in full.

  4. Charlotte

    One person per booth.

    North Carolina state statute.

The same question, four jurisdictions, four answers. Nothing about this is national.

A booth with a door that shuts is a private room. A booth with a cut-down door, or a curtain, or a rule that one person may be inside it, is a viewing machine with a seat. The difference is the entire business, and which one you are standing in depends on which county line you are on.

The New Jersey comparison in that question is not hypothetical. The venues on the Camden page work exactly as he describes: you pay at a door and the room behind it is open, with people moving between booths. If that is what you want it is the best thing in this directory. If you have brought somebody who has never done this before, it is not.

One cinema, ten years, then an oil change

Petit Cine I & II

Closed

810 Central Avenue, Albany, NY 12206

Opened
25 June 1973
Screens
Two
Opening programme
Head Nurse, Eyeball and Juice on one screen, Waitresses on the other
Later
Mainstream films on screen one, gay male films on screen two
Closed
1983
Then
A Jiffy Lube, which has also closed. The building is boarded up.

The cinema record calls this Albany’s only adult movie theatre. For a state capital, over the whole run of this trade, that is a remarkable claim and we have one source for it, so treat it as the record rather than as settled.

The split programme in its later years is the thing to notice. Ordinary films on one screen and gay male films on the other, under one roof, with one box office. That arrangement turns up again and again on this site: Honolulu had a gay screen upstairs and a straight screen downstairs, and Lexington still has two theatres in one building split the same way.

It closed in 1983 and the building became a Jiffy Lube. A contributor in 2010 asked whether anything really changed when the porn theatre closed and the quick lube moved in. The oil change place has since closed as well, and the building is still standing, boarded up, on Central Avenue.

That outlasting is worth a line. Across this directory the adult house usually loses the building to something more respectable: an arts trust, a church, a concert hall, a car park. Here the respectable replacement failed first.
